Swiss Pines is a private Japanese garden and wildlife preserve with flowers, statuary, nature trail, streams and ponds located on the north side of Charlestown Road between the village and Hollow Road. Beautiful and tranquil Swiss Pines was designed and created by the late Mr. Arnold Bartschi and is open to the public through the efforts of Henriette Bumeder. A totally private facility, Swiss Pines does not benefit from any public monies or public grants or tax relief.
Here are some things to consider as you plan your visit to Swiss Pines.
- Hours
Due to the nature of the terrain, Swiss Pines is only open if the ground is fairly dry. The gardens are open Wednesday through Friday from 10 AM to 3 PM, and on Saturday from 9 AM to 3 PM, from the 2nd Wednesday in May until the end of November. The gardens are closed Sundays through Tuesdays, holidays and during wet or inclement weather.
- Cautions
Portions of Swiss Pines have uneven terrain as well as stepping stones, and visitors must be in good physical condition to navigate the paths. The gardens are not recommended for senior citizens with any medical problems or anyone with walking difficulties due to age, weight or other infirmity.
- Restrictions
Swiss Pines has limited resources. The facility is neither state nor publicly funded. We are fortunate to have access to it at all. The manager and trustee of the gardens has found it necessary to enforce the following rules -
- No food, drinking, smoking or picnics
- No children under the age of 12 years, including carried babies
- Teenagers must be with a parent
- Visitors must wear walking shoes, and may not wear beach clothing.
- Visitors must stay on the path and follow the arrow guides
- Groups
Swiss Pines cannot accommodate bus tours. Groups may not exceed 15 visitors, and must visit by appointment only. A $5.00 donation per visitor is charged for groups visiting the gardens, and should be paid in advance.
- Weddings
- Wedding ceremonies are permitted, but only for wedding parties not exceeding 15 people. Wedding receptions and similar activites are not permitted. A minister is available on request.
- Donations
- Donations are welcome and greatly appreciated. Swiss Pines needs the support of the public.
