Power Through Participation!
A Short Course in Local Government Planning
A Powerful Experience in Protecting our Open Space

Each year our county loses thousands of acres to development. We believe that although development is inevitable, it also can be well thought out, planned, and we can do a much better job of it than we are now doing. This is a course in how to become active in this critical conversation and have your voice heard at the local level.
By participating fully in this course you will:
  • Gain real understanding of how our local government operates
  • Expand your network of other concerned citizens
  • Learn how to become active in this debate and how to involve others
  • Understand all of the issues and be able to debate them openly
  • Meet first hand successful activists and learn directly from them
  • Become much more knowledgeable about the issues in your community
  • Clarify how your engagement in this issue can make a big difference in the outcome!
Different Kind of Learning
This is not a sit back and listen course. Part of the time you will be learning from the experts, but a good part of the course will be actual research done by you with the support of your fellow class members. For example, your learning team will be asked to interview a township supervisor and present your results back to the class. We have built in fun, exciting, meaningful experience into this course from the beginning. Our only goal is to make sure to the best of our ability that you have a terrific learning experience.
Values That Underlie the Course
We believe that activism should combine real work with real team effort. We believe that this learning should be participatory, experiential and fun. In the end we all want our efforts to make a difference. We want to create a lasting legacy of more green, more open and more natural beauty. These are simple, yet powerful ideas. We believe in obtaining valid information, so that we can make informed choices. We believe in mutual accountability. Most of all we believe that we have a say and learning to become active is a critical part of being a contributing citizen.
