A Message from the
Charlestown Township Board of Supervisors
PLANNING COMMISSION MEETINGS:
THE BUCK STARTS HERE
Charlestown Township is fortunate to have concerned, educated and involved citizens who have historically demonstrated their interest in the community through spirited participation at our public meetings. Many times in the past, there have been audiences of over 100 people at Board meetings when a "hot" topic was on the agenda.
But where do the majority of these hot topics originate? Where are they first proposed, discussed and formulated? When is the first and best opportunity for your input and your voice to be heard? These matters start at the advisory commission level, with the Planning Commission, Open Space Commission, Parks & Recreation Board, Historical Commission, and other advisory groups. These dedicated volunteers examine these subjects and hammer out the details with the guidance of our consulting professionals. Only after careful, conscientious deliberations do they make their recommendations to the Township Supervisors for final scrutiny and approval. Of all our advisory groups, the Planning Commission is the most active and welcomes input from our residents at their meetings.
The Supervisors depend on the Planning Commission to initiate reviews of all subdivision and land development plans from the first preliminary sketch to the final plan. But this group does much more than simply respond to applications for new development. For the past two years, the Planning Commission has worked with our consultant, Thomas Comitta Associates, to draft an update to the 1976 Comprehensive Plan. After dozens of public workshop meetings and three public hearings, the Supervisors approved the Comprehensive Plan Update on December 3, 2001.
The Comprehensive Plan is a guide to future decisions pertaining to land use, housing, community facilities, circulation, utilities and open space. In order to develop the Update, the Planning Commission reviewed Charlestown's natural and cultural attributes with the goal of developing strategies to conserve our essential character while providing for carefully managed growth.
The next step in this process is to implement the objectives of the Comprehensive Plan through revisions to the existing Zoning Ordinance and Subdivision & Land Development Ordinance. These revisions will enable us to preserve the rural vitality and beauty of our Township that is so highly valued by us all.
The Planning Commission has scheduled the fourth Tuesday of every month, beginning on July 23, 2002, for public work sessions dedicated to the formulation of these new Ordinances. We invite you to join us at these meetings, as well as our plan review meetings on the second Tuesday each month. Meetings are held at the Great Valley Middle School Choral Room at 7:30 P.M.
WE WELCOME AND ENCOURAGE YOUR ATTENDANCE AND PARTICIPATION. YOUR INPUT IS CRUCIAL TO CHARLESTOWN'S FUTURE!
