MINUTES: January 16, 2002

- Can be used to distribute to family members.
- Edited
- Add question that allows concerns about easements to surface.
- Add a question that addresses problems of land ownership.
And send a definition of easement to accompany
Reviewed our concerns about confidentiality: Won't be trumpeted but will be treated discretely as it is in process.
We must define open space:
- Homework: One more crack at defining open space
- Process for defining usage - include options.
- Address landowners' concerns
- Defined by sources of money
Definition:
Open space consists of those elements in the landscape that lend Charlestown its distinct rural and as yet unspoiled character. These include farms and forest, stream valleys and ridgelines, vistas and hollows. Historic farms, villages, and ways shaped the land and gave rise to the open space qualities that are so cherished today. Low density rural settlement patterns accommodate Charlestown's population without upsetting the fragile ecological balance in the Pickering, French, and Valley Creek watersheds. Contemporary development pressures and patterns threaten all of this.
How the open space is ultimately used will depend on agreement between the landowner, the township, and money sources.
Land Trust and Money Sources:
Let's hear from Bonnie Van Allen and Jake Scott:
- Plus and minuses of a regional land trust
- Why do it instead of using existing land trusts such as NLT, etc.
- Where does it get the money? What are good sources of money?
- Can you use private money to hold land?
- How do you make money with it?
- Based on what you know now, what would you do differently?
Sue and Aliena will do some research for public money.
Marketing:
Frank Corcoran, Thom Korber and Kevin Kuhn will develop a marketing plan and communications strategy with township citizens and large landowners.
Community Garden:
Paul Matsiras, township resident, would like to begin
