Fire Marshal Report to the Board of Supervisors

January 6, 2003

During the month of December, the Kimberton Fire Company responded to one fire, one false alarm and one alarm system. During December, the East Whiteland Township Volunteer Fire Association, Kimberton Fire Company and I responded to four automatic alarms, one gas leak, one rubbish fire and three vehicle accidents.

The emergency calls were as follows:
Fire at Charlestown and Hollow Roads (Nov)
False alarm on Yellow Springs Road (Nov)
Alarm system on Jeffords Court (Nov)
   Automatic fire alarms on:
  • Ravenhill Rd
  • Hillsover Lane
  • Rees Road
  • Whitehorse Road
   Gas leak on Beaufort Court
Rubbish on Newcomen Road at Conestoga Road
   Vehicle accidents on:
  • Blackberry Lane
  • Whitehorse Road near Mine Road
  • State and Union Hill Roads
Our precipitation continues at an above normal rate with December being nearly 3/4" above average. The year 2002 total is about 3" below normal. The drought status has been changed from emergency to warning so we should continue to follow the water conservation measures as outlined by the county and state.
Reflecting on 2002 there were 165 incidents to which emergency services responded. Most notable were: 33 automatic fire alarms which were mostly false, 65 vehicle accidents, 2 dwellings, 2 vehicles, 9 odor investigations. The year 2002, in comparison with 2001, showed a 37% decrease in automatic alarms but a 10% increase in vehicle accidents. All other incident categories showed very little change.
All of these incidents represent thousands of volunteer hours, both in operations and training. The women and men who responded to these calls, and the ambulance and medic unit services that cover our township, most of whom are volunteer, should be recognized and thanked.
I have again enjoyed serving as your Fire Marshal and Emergency Management Coordinator for 2002. It remains a positive experience for me and I feel that we are continuing to increase the fire safety awareness of our businesses and citizens. I hope that I may continue to serve you for 2003.
The next meeting for the Emergency Operations Center staff is January 16, 2003 at 7:30 pm. We will have a guest speaker from Chester County Emergency Management.
Please drive safely and remember that when the road looks wet, it may well be icy.
Respectfully submitted,
Frederick C. Alston
Fire Marshal / Emergency Management Coordinator
