Fire Marshal Report to the Board of Supervisors
January 3, 2000
During the month of December, the East Whiteland and Kimberton Fire Companies and I responded to four automatic alarms, one gas leak, one trees/wires fire, one medical assist, two brush fires, one CO detector activation, one furnace, one rescue and six vehicle accidents.
The emergency calls were as follows:
Automatic alarms at:
- Green Lane Road
- Ashenfelter Road
- Spring Mill Drive
- Mine Road (multiple times this year - same residence)
Gas leak on Tudor Court near Yorktown Road
Trees/wires fire at Charlestown and Hollow Roads
Medical assist on Tinker Hill Lane
Brush fires on Seven Oaks Road and Ashenfelter Road
CO detector activation on Green Lane
RoadFurnace on Swiss Lane
Rescue at Whitehorse and Morehall Roads
Vehicle accidents on:
- Charlestown Road and Swiss Pine Road
- Pickering Spur and Charlestown Roads
- Charlestown Road
- Coldstream and Marian Roads
- Charlestown and Hilltop Roads
- Union Hill Road
Precipitation for December was again about 1.1Ò below normal which brings the year-to-date to 2.7" above normal.
Looking back on 2000, I would like to review the major emergency services provided to our township over the last year. In all, there were 168 incidents - 95 fire related and 64 vehicle accidents to which the East Whiteland, Kimberton Fire Companies and I responded. Most notable were: 53 automatic fire alarms - mostly false - and 64 vehicle accidents. The year 2000, in comparison with 1999, showed a 61% increase in incidents, a 96% increase in automatic fire alarms and a 137% increase in vehicle accidents.
All of these incidents represent thousands of volunteer hours, both in operations and training. The women and men who responded to these calls plus the ambulance and medic unit services that cover our township, most of whom are volunteer, should be recognized and thanked.
Looking forward to 2001, several items should be addressed in the emergency management area. They are:
- Hazardous Materials Reporting and Storage
- Update existing Fire Control Ordinance
- Update and adopt Emergency Response Plan
I have again enjoyed serving as your Fire Marshal for 2000. It is a positive experience for me and I feel that we are increasing the fire safety awareness of our businesses and citizens. I hope that I may continue to serve as your Fire Marshal for 2001.
Respectfully submitted,
Frederick C. Alston, Fire Marshal
