Fire Marshal Report to the Board of Supervisors

November 2, 1998

The month of October was relatively busy for the East Whiteland and Kimberton Fire Companies that respond to our township. There were one dwelling fire, three automatic fire alarms, one medic assist, one wires on roadway, eight vehicle accidents, and one rubbish fire.

The incidents were as follow:

Dwelling fire on Hilltop and Charlestown Roads

Automatic fire alarms on Great Woods Lane and Seven Oaks Road (twice)

    Vehicle accidents on:

  •     4000 block of State Road
  •     Rt. 29 south of Hollow Road
  •     Charlestown Road south of Pickering Road
  •     Coldstream Road at the bad curve
  •     Coldstream Road west of Charlestown Road
  •     Charlestown Road south of Pickering Road
  •     Charlestown and Hollow Roads
Medic assist on Valley Hill Road

    Wires down on Phoenixville Pike

Rubbish fire on Yellow Springs Road

I inspected a Conrail train with non-standard (for our area) engines, inspected two businesses and the Charlestown Elementary School during a fire drill, assisted the State Police at Route 29 and Charlestown Road, checked two open burning incidents and assisted the Charlestown Townwatch patrol on Mischief and Halloween nights.

Precipitation for October was 1.8", nearly 1" below the normal. 2.6". We are now about 6" below normal for 1998. Please continue to be careful with any permitted burning and do not leave the fire unattended.

Did you change your smoke detector batteries when you changed your clock to standard time? If not, do it now! The batteries must be changed at least once per year.

Be very careful while driving and be on the lookout for deer. There are a lot more moving about at this time of year and if you see one, there will usually be more around. They can do a lot of damage to your vehicle.

Respectfully submitted,

Frederick C. Alston
Fire Marshal

Verbal addendum:  During November, we will be installing blue hydrant markers at each of the 40 plus hydrants in the township.  These markers will make it easier for fire department personnel to locate the hydrants, not only at night, but also in the snow.
