Fire Marshal Report to the Board of Supervisors

October 4, 1999

What a September! During the month, the East Whiteland Fire Company responded to one house explosion, one hazardous materials incident, four automatic alarms, two vehicle accidents, three odor investigations and two wires fires. The Kimberton Fire Company has not provided a report as yet but they responded to one water rescue and one trees and wires incidents. Most of the calls were hurricane related.
The emergency calls were as follows:
House explosion on Union Hill Road
Hazardous Materials on Phoenixville Pike
Automatic fire alarm on:
  • Yellow Springs Road (2)
  • Rosewood Drive
  • Southwinds Lane
Odor investigations on:
  • Blackstone Lane (2)
  • Sawgrass Lane
Wires on Phoenixville Pike
Vehicle accidents on:
  • Ashenfelter and Whitehorse Roads
  • Whitehorse Road and Southwinds Lane involving a truck carrying explosives
Water rescue on Phoenixville Pike
Trees and wires on Tinkerhill Road
The township burning ban was lifted subsequent to the lifting of the county's ban.
Precipitation for September was 10" above normal for the month due in a large part to Hurricane Floyd. The Governor has lifted the drought emergency but Chester County is still under a drought watch, the least severe type of drought declaration.
I reviewed the fire hydrant work at Charlestown Oaks, inspected a nursing facility and attended an EPA meeting regarding the Chemclene Corporation fire.
The Limerick Generating Station Drill was held September 14th and from initial reports, the Charlestown EOC made a very good showing thanks to the dedicated and knowledgeable people staffing the EOC.
Respectfully submitted,

Frederick C. Alston
Fire Marshal
