Fire Marshal Report to the Board of Supervisors
October 7, 2002
During the month of September, the East Whiteland and Kimberton Fire Companies and I responded to two automatic fire alarms, one brush fire, one power line down, one odor investigation, one gas release investigation, one fire drill and eleven vehicle accidents.
The emergency calls were as follows:
Automatic fire alarms at:
- Pikeland Road
- Merlin Road
Brush fire on Tudor Court
Power line down on Merlin Road
Odor investigation on General Warren Boulevard
Gas release investigation on Phoenixville Pike
Vehicle accidents on:
- Coldstream Road at the "S" bend (4 incidents)
- State Road at the "S" bend (2 incidents, one with a motorcycle)
- Whitehorse Road near Ashenfelter Road
- Charlestown and Pickering Dam Roads
- State Road near Morehall Road (2 incidents)
- Phoenixville Pike near the Grange
Fire drill on Maryhill Road
Precipitation for September was 0.2" below normal for the month and is 8.1" below normal year-to-date. We remain under a drought emergency and a ban on all outside burning. Please continue to follow the water conservation measures as out lined by the county and state.
I am continuing the "installation" of emergency lock box rapid entry systems when requested. The four hydrants in Charlestown Park have been "bagged" (taken out of service) until we determine what we are going to do with them.
A meeting and training session at the Charlestown Township Emergency Operations Center was held on September 19. Work is continuing on the Township Emergency Plan.
We are again starting to get into "deer" season. Be very careful on all roads, especially in the evening and early morning. Before you light up your fireplace, have your chimney checked and cleaned if necessary. Each year many homes are damaged or destroyed due to chimney fires.
Finally, a lot of people are calling the fire departments directly when there is an emergency. Please, call 911. There may be instances when there is no one to take your call at the fire house. The 911 center is staffed 24/7 and will quickly and accurately handle your calls for help.
Respectfully submitted,
Frederick C. Alston
Fire Marshal / Emergency Management Coordinator
