Fire Marshal Report to the Board of Supervisors

August 5, 2002

During the month of July, the East Whiteland and Kimberton Fire Companies and I responded to one automatic fire alarm, one smoke (CO) detector, one open burning, one fireworks, two wires, one odor investigation, one RR signal failure, one helicopter landing and four vehicle accidents.
The emergency calls were as follows:
   Automatic fire alarms at:
  • Lewis Court
Smoke (CO) detector on Fairfax Court
   Open burning on Phoenixville Pike
   Fireworks on Longview Farm Lane
   Wires on:
  • Morehall and Whitehorse Roads
  • Benburb Road
Odor investigation on General Warren Blvd
RR signal failure at Morehall and State Roads
Helicopter landing at Morehall and State Roads
   Vehicle accidents on:
  • State Road north of Aldham Road
  • Conestoga and Newcomen Roads
  • State Road north of Charlestown Road
  • Charlestown and Pickering Dam Roads
Precipitation for July was 2.2" below normal for the month. We remain under a drought emergency and a ban on all outside burning. Please continue to follow the water conservation measures as out lined by the county and state.
At the request of the East Whiteland Fire Company, I coordinated the installation of a temporary railroad crossing from the end of Warner Lane to Phoenixville Pike. It is posted for "Authorized and Emergency Vehicles Only" and "No Parking by order of the Fire Marshal". This crossing will be used for emergencies arising while the roads are closed for bridge work. I would like to thank Norfolk Southern Railroad, J. D. Eckman Company and Allen A. Meyers Company for their cooperation in getting this crossing insatalled.
I checked out four hydrants at the Charlestown Park. They all need some mechanical work and repainting. I also worked at the Kimberton Fire Company Fair during the last week of July.
Potassium Iodide (KI), thyroid blocking tablets, will be available to all residents and employees who live or work within the 10-mile radius Emergency Planning Zone (EPZ) of the Limerick Generating Station. The KI tablets will be distributed to residents starting Thursday morning, Aug. 15, through Wednesday evening, Aug. 21, at the Kimberton Fair Grounds, Route 113, Kimberton. This site is expected to be open weekdays from 10 a.m. until 7 p.m. and on the weekends from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. Employees will receive their KI from their employers.
Respectfully submitted,
Frederick C. Alston
Fire Marshal / Emergency Management Coordinator
