Fire Marshal Report to the Board of Supervisors

July 10, 2000

Please be alert for children playing on or near the roadway. Please drive carefully and respect the posted speed limits and stop signs.
During the month of June, the East Whiteland and Kimberton Fire Companies had an automatic alarm streak of eleven alarms that they responded to, and one open burning, one field, one trees and wires fire, one elevator rescue, one helicopter landing and six vehicle accidents.
The emergency calls were as follows:
   Automatic alarms on:
  • Raven Hill Road
  • Country Lane
  • General Warren Boulevard
  • Three Ponds Lane - same dwelling, 3 times in 4 days
  • Morehall Road - same business, 5 times in 12 days for a total of 15+ this year
Open burning on Yellow Springs Road

   Field on Mary Hill Road

Trees and wires on Newcomen Road

   Elevator rescue on Mine Road

   Vehicle Accidents on:
  • Route 401 near Bell Circle
  • Route 29 and Whitehorse Road
  • Wells and Yellow Springs Roads
  • Coldstream Road at the ïSÍ bend - 2 accidents
  • Rt 29 and Union Hill Road
Precipitation for June was 1/10" below normal. Year-to-date remains about 1" above normal. Please be careful if you must burn and do it safely - in an approved container and only burn leaves and waste papers.
The repeated automatic alarm situation at the same location has gotten much worse. Not only is the situation out of control, there is little, under the current 32 year old Fire Control Ordinance, that can be done about it.
We are still awaiting the update to the Fire Control Ordinance and the generation of a new Hazardous Materials Reporting and Storage Ordinance that has been in the SolicitorÍs hands for over four months. I would like to get these ordinances resolved so that we may get to other pressing safety issues.
Respectfully submitted,

Frederick C. Alston, Fire Marshal
