Fire Marshal Report to the Board of Supervisors

May 6, 2002

During the month of April, the East Whiteland and Kimberton Fire Companies and I responded to three automatic fire alarms, one smoke investigation / open burning, one mulch fire and six vehicle accidents.
The emergency calls were as follows:
   Automatic fire alarms at:
  • Three Ponds Lane
  • Howells Road
  • Pikeland Road
   Smoke investigations on:
  • Open burning on Merlin Road
   Mulch fire on Jeffords Court
   Vehicle accidents on:
  • Charleston Hunt Drive
  • Pikeland Road near Church Road
  • Charlestown and Buckwalter Roads
  • Coldstream Road near Maryhill Road (2 accidents)
  • Bodine Road at Turnpike bridge (on Turnpike)
Precipitation for April was 1.5" below normal for the month. We remain under a drought emergency along with a burning ban on all outside burning. This applies to both the township and the county. Please continue to follow the water conservation measures as outlined by the county and state. A citation was issued for the open burning.
I met with Norfolk Southern Railroad regarding fire prevention along their Devault Line. I also attended an Emergency Management training on Response to Terrorism. The Emergency Operations Center staff and I held a table-top exercise in preparation for the biennial Limerick Nuclear Generating Station Drill scheduled for May 7, 2002.
Our deer population is becoming very active. Please be very careful when driving, especially between dusk and dawn when the deer are most active. They can do an extensive amount of damage to your vehicle and it doesn't do the deer much good either.
Respectfully submitted,
Frederick C. Alston
Fire Marshal / Emergency Management Coordinator
