On Saturday, October 4, 2003, the Charlestown Historical Society celebrated its 30th Anniversary with a dinner at the Burgoon barn on Yellow Springs Road. This is the first time that our dinner has been held at this historic barn and it was a great experience. Our thanks to the Doctors Carroll and Jane Burgoon. Hurricane Isabel made us cautious about our original date, but the weather did not dampen the spirits of the nearly 110 guests as they enjoyed the evening in the festively decorated barn and tent. Much credit is due to the hard working Patrons Dinner Committee, chaired by Loretta Watson and Dorothy Calanese, and assisted by Janet Baldwin, Ellen Behrle, Phil DeFranco, Russ Hanscom, Louise Cantrell-Kehoe, Debbie Kuhn, Neila Kun, Nancy Long, John Pittock, Nancy Pittock and Karen Steenhoff. After a delicious dinner, followed by a piece of the beautifully decorated 30th Anniversary cake, Janet Baldwin presented short biographies of the founding members of our society, to whom the dinner was dedicated. An Auction conducted by Dan Alleva and capably aided by Ellen Behrle was a fun part of the evening. Many of our members donated items to be auctioned. Some of those were homemade breads and jellies from the Pittocks, an original watercolor painted by Debbie Kuhn, orchid baskets from Michael Bowell and furniture constructed by Paul Hogan from the wood removed from the Ice Dam wall. We thank them and the many others who donated items and those who bought them. Many thanks to John Pittock for providing wonderful photos of this year's event.
