Dear Friends:
Happy Thanksgiving and Greetings from Afghanistan!
Wendy - Thanksgivign 2002I'll start off by saying "Thank You" to all of our family and friends who have been helping Doug with the children and giving him encouragement, as he's been a single father for the past six months. I know there are many prayers being said for our family and I believe that God has heard them. The children have remained healthy and Doug hasn't lost his sanity yet (at least not that I can detect from this side of the world.)
Our military in this theater of operation has remained safe thus far. The bulk of terrorist forces in Afghanistan have been bested by the Coalition's superior military might. Although there are scattered rocket attacks on various operating bases and installations within Afghanistan, their numbers are dwindling. Our efforts to win the hearts and minds of the people of this country and assist them in building a nation have been promising in most instances. There are still evil people here, but they are primarily thugs and criminals; the terrorist networks are breaking.
I've seen quite a bit here in Afghanistan over the past several months and the more I am witness to, the more I am convinced of my good fortune to be an American. The poverty, ignorance and irreverence for life is sometimes unbelievable. This country is struggling, there is no doubt, and will continue to toil for many years to come. Lives of typical Afghans are centered around survival, and the conveniences we take for granted in the US are an unattainable luxury here.
But I've been blessed to have good friends and neighbors watching over my family these past six months. Lately, I find myself thinking more and more of home. Especially now at Thanksgiving. This is a season of family and friends and I pray that I will be back home in PA before too long. However, Uncle Sam has chosen to not give my unit a definitive date for redeployment.
Until I'm back home, please know how grateful I am for your continued dinners for Doug and the children, assistance, letters, packages, thoughts and prayers. I wish you all a wonderful holiday season and hope to see you soon!
God Bless!
