"Homes where refinement
was never a stranger"

Pictures from Memory's Wall
p. 10

They buried him there, 'neath the shade of the poplars,

   To sleep till awakened when Gabriel calls;

The owl and the bat, long his only companions,

   Alone then gave voice to those echoing walls.

The years sped away: through a night dark and misty,

   A light dimly shone, but no sound could be heard;

The morrow revealed that a ghoulish intruder

   Had plundered this grave of the jewels interred.

Then quick spread the news of the act, so atrocious;

   Of censure, the fiend was accorded full meed;

In deep kindled anger men haste to the grave-side,

   Repairing the wrong while condemning the deed.

But great was the change from abode of the hermit,

   When "Charlestown Lyceum" met here in its "Hall",

Where country folk gathered in bi-weekly meetings

   That always brought pleasure and profit to all.
