The smithy
"The smithy"

Pictures from Memory's Wall
p. 9

There entered, long after, a stranger, a hermit,

   Forsaking the world, its annoys and alarms;

Supplied were his wants and there never was lacking;

   For him, was the bounty of neighboring farms.

From one came his food; from another, his raiment;

   Nor yet overlooked were his fuel and light;

And thus sped his day, hid in mystic seclusion,

   Till twilight had yielded to gloom of the night.

Yes: there all alone, with no human companion,

   The Death-Angel found him and bore him away;

They laid him to rest mid the crumbling old tombstones;

   Life's myst'ry unfathomed, he sleeps there to-day.

But, spite of the garment of poverty wearing,

   Much gold he had hidden, and jewels of worth;

The gems, with the secrets they held in their keeping,

   His bosom adorned as he sank in the earth.
