Abode of the hermit

Pictures from Memory's Wall
p. 8

XXV.

The pupils who there so reluctantly studied,

   The teacher who taught us with patience and skill,

Have scattered, alas, to return again, never, -

   But the joys of those school-days remain with us still.

XXVI.

Close by, on the hill-top, still sits an old building,

   Surrounded by poplars, like sentinels grand,

Whose ivy-clad walls, like the tombstones around it,

   Are crumbling to ruin 'neath Time's heavy hand;

XXVII.

Where Mennonites, sore and deep-scarred by oppression,

   Despised and reviled in their home o'er the deep,

Found refuge from storm and erected their altar; -

   Their turmoils now ended, in peace here they sleep.

XXVIII.

Here, screened from the world, its enticements, enchantments,

   Full meekly, devoutly, at worship they sat;

But dwindled their number; the building abandoned,

   Soon furnished a home for the owl and the bat.
