Log Cabin
"I miss the log-cabin"

Pictures from Memory's Wall
p. 7

Still on as my eye to the westward is sweeping,

   O'er hillside and valley that nestles between,

I miss the log-cabin that stood by the roadside,

   And grieve that this landmark no longer is seen.

Surrounded by woodland and high-reaching hill-tops,

   Shut in where the sumach and alder abound,

Another old school, in its leafy seclusion,

   Once sheltered the youth of the countryside round.

Pine benches, embellished by jack-knife's sly carving,

   And flanking each side-wall, gave seating to all;

The white-washed old stove from its place in the centre,

   Scant comfort sent forth to the bench next the wall.

The building has gone, in its place is another;

   But mem'ry still hallows the spot where it stood;

'Twas ever a storehouse of deep-hidden treasure

   That gave for our delving full measure of good.
