"The Methodist Church"

Pictures from Memory's Wall
p. 6

XVII.

Near Pick'ring's green banks, as they bend to the westward,

   Mid shade of the maple, by graves of the dead,

The Methodist Church, in its modest seclusion,

   Tells naught of another, once there in its stead,

XVIII.

That looked to the southward through stately old doorways -

   The right for the women, the left for the men -

Where truth was expounded, and loud rang hosannas;

   I would I might list to those anthems again.

XIX.

There gathered the faithful at "Quarterly Conf'rence;"

   To "Class" and to "Lovefeast," devoutly they came;

Their pure, simple lives were as "living epistles,"

   So trusting, confiding, their faith in His name.

XX.

But where are the forms and the faces familiar,

   The "sisters," the "brethren," those God-fearing men?

They've passed "through the valley" and crossed "the dark river,"

   And few are now living who gathered there then.
