Covered Bridge
"The old covered bridge"

"To fill overflowing a trough in its way"

Pictures from Memory's Wall
p. 3

Till there, in its haste, by the roadside it pauses

   To fill overflowing a trough in its way;

Then on down the hill and away through the meadows,

   Till lost where the ripples of Pickering play.

In summer and winter, in springtime and autumn,

   Its bass and its treble, each carries its part;

Flow on, little brooklet, in sunshine and shadow,

   The love I once bore thee still lives in my heart.

The old covered bridge that resounded so loudly

   To rumble of wheel and the clatter of hoof,

Has long given place to a new iron structure

   That offers no refuge 'neath sheltering roof.
