The Village
"The village"

Pickering Creek w/ripple
"Pickering Creek, with ripple and windings"

Pictures from Memory's Wall
p. 2

The landscape that twilight's so gently enfolding,

   Still wears every charm of the long, long ago;

The hills, less imposing as groves are departing;

   Yet, road, field and hillside but few changes know

Old Pickering Creek, with its ripplings and windings

   Reflecting the hues of the bright western sky,

Glides on as of yore, in its haste to the Schuylkill,

   But lacks now the volume that used to flow by.

The village I see, with its serpentine highway,

   Its store and its pump, and its smithy and mill;

The low-bending willow o'er stream rushing by it

   And dancing and singing its way down the hill.
