Qualifying Art and Artists
All art at the show, whether for sale by the artist or the owner (not the artist) or for exhibit only must meet the following qualifications.
  1. Only original "Fine Art" will be accepted. However, artists bringing their original work may also bring a portfolio that includes reproductions of the artist's work for sale.
  2. Art is not limited to paintings but encompasses other forms of fine art including wood work, sculpture, ceramics, etc.
  3. Fine art photography may be entered in this show. However, be aware that the show committee anticipates a future show featuring photos of scenes within Charlestown Township.
  4. The creators of the art must be current or past residents of Charlestown Township. This must be verifiable. A list of already qualified artists is provided below. Artists who currently live outside Charlestown Township who are not on our list will be asked to verify that they at one time lived in the Township. Owners of art by Charlestown artists living or deceased who are not on our list should have some evidence that each artist lives or has lived in the Township. (See the list below of known artists who qualify as one time Charlestown Township residents.)
  5. Art must be suitable for family viewing. Remember this show is being held in an elementary school. The decision of the show committee as to suitability will be final.
  6. Paintings may be of any suitable subject, though local subject matter is especially welcome.
If you are an artist selling your own work, please read the GREEN section carefully. If you are an owner selling art from your private collection, please go to our Owner's Art for Exhibit section.

Why is this show limited to creations by Charlestown artists?
Last year the Charlestown Historical Society conducted an art show limited to painted scenes of our township. This precluded many artists from our township whose work is of other subject matter as well as media other than paintings. It also precluded additional art by some Charlestown artists who created wonderful works unrelated to our township. This year we have kept the focus on Charlestown but in terms of the creator of the art, not the subject matter.
Several members of the Historical Society privately own art by Charlestown artists, some recent, and some in media other than painting (i.e. sculpture, woodwork, etc.). It's reasonable to assume that quite a few other residents own art by Charlestown artists, and through that ownership, those residents would probably enjoy seeing the work of Charlestown artists displayed in other residents' homes. We would like to display as many of these works of art as possible in one place, and invite all residents to come and enjoy looking at the items being displayed, whether for sale or exhibit only.
Does the artist have to be (or have been) a Charlestown resident?
Yes!   This is the only restriction, other than the subject matter being suitable for family viewing. The show committee has prepared a list of "pre-qualified artists", living and deceased, which is available here.
I know a qualifying artist or owner (collector) with qualifying art, but he/she does not have Internet access. How can I get the show information to that person?
Either print out the relevant information (including the appropriate form) from this site and mail or deliver to that person, or contact Jacob Merriwether and he will get the material to that person.
I am an amateur artist and have never exhibited or sold my work. May I exhibit or sell in this show?
Absolutely!  The only requirement is that you live (or have lived) in Charlestown Township. We encourage "unknown" Charlestown artists to participate. There is no judging or awards, so this is an easy way to "get your feet wet" exhibiting and possibly selling your own work.
How do my items get to and from the show?
We will ask you to transport your own art. Artists must bring their art to the show between 7 and 9 pm Friday March 15 (preferred) or between 7 and 9:30 am Saturday, March 16. The same applies to owners (collectors) who are exhibiting art and possibly selling individual items. CHS will provide transport for owners (collectors) who are unable to transport their own items.
I am physically unable to deliver and pick-up my art. Can I still exhibit at the show?
Absolutely! Let the show committee know when you apply to submit your art and someone will be assigned to pick up your art (May 14 or 15) and return it to you (May 16 [evening] or Monday May 17).
How secure will my art work be?
The show will be indoor in a secure, climate controlled building and your treasures will be handled carefully, protected from the elements, and displayed by experienced art show organizers. Security will be provided and art will be insured.
Do I hang/position my own art?
It depends. If you are an artist selling your own work, you will hang/position your own work where you are assigned at check-in, unless it is oversized. If oversized, the show committee will hang/position the oversized item(s). If you are an owner (collector) loaning your art for the show, the show committee will hang/position your art.
I will be selling my own art. Can I determine where it will be displayed?
No, but we will consider your preference. The location of your art at the show will be determined by the show committee when you check-in. However, there is obviously an advantage to getting your art there Friday (7-9 pm) as locations will be assigned on a first come, first served basis.
How will I know you received the form I submit?
When we receive your form we will email you a confirmation, including a copy of what you entered in all fields of the form.
Is there a fee to get in to see the show?
No. The show will be free. This is part of the Charlestown Historical Society's outreach program aimed at acquainting residents with the creativity and beauty created by our township residents.
Will it cost anything for me to exhibit or sell items?
There is no fee for exhibiting qualifying art at the show, whether for sale or not. A 30% commission will be charged by the Charlestown Historical Society for all actual sales, whether by the artist or by the owner (collector).
Are photos included in the show?
Yes. Fine art photography is welcome. However, be aware that the show committee anticipates holding a show in the near future which will focus on Photographed Scenes of Charlestown.
